I don’t label myself as making a particular style of furniture, although I am undoubtedly driven by the Arts and Crafts movement, the Shakers, and the Japanese. My work tends to be contemporary, although I resist that term because it has connotations of space-age silly furniture (to me). I emphasize simplicity and purpose. I do not wish to shock people with my designs, rather I wish for people to enjoy a peaceful existence with my pieces. So much of this “new” and “exciting” furniture quickly becomes tiresome to the eyes. I find if a piece screams for attention it has immediately said all it can say, on the other hand, a simple, well-built side table will become warmer with age and be calming to the owner, speaking slowly over time. I included some close-ups so you can see that my joinery is accurate and precise. The majority of my pieces are finished with oil/varnish and topped with butcher’s wax.
