Brian & Jean Tildesley

We have been restoring both our own and clients’ high-quality pieces of antique furniture for almost 30 years.

Some 15 years ago we restored our first rocking horse and rapidly became fascinated by these delightful creatures which charm both children and adults. So much so that we now concentrate exclusively on restoring and making these highly decorative heirlooms, which are at home anywhere in the house, not just in the nursery.

Given our antiques background and being perfectionists, we aim to reproduce faithfully the special character achieved by the original Victorian and Edwardian craftsmen. Unlike many modern rocking horse makers, we do not attempt to impose our own personality upon our rocking horses, preferring instead to continue the delightful styles developed by the old makers. For this reason we use exact patterns taken from the very best examples of antique rocking horses, which we feel cannot be improved upon.

Note from Eastender Restoration: We are unable to accept any more Christmas orders for our carousel horses. First delivery for new orders on or about March 1, 2002.

Classic Dappled Grey Deluxe Rocking Horse

Rocking horses in our De Luxe range are fully carved in the traditional manner
and feature the additional muscle carving to the neck and top of front legs,
along with the stepped hoof rail typical of the best Ayres original rocking horses.
This De Luxe rocking horse, commissioned by an English Earl for his granddaughter’s birthday,
is based upon a fine Ayres rocking horse of circa 1880.

Classic Dappled Grey Deluxe Rocking Horse On Bow Rockers

This splendid large rocking horse, around seven feet long overall, shows the elegant lines
of the traditional bow rockers, and is a fine example of our De Luxe range of rocking horses.
Although extremely decorative, rocking horses on bow rockers do require more space
than rocking horses on safety stands because the rocking action causes them to travel.

Antique Rocking Horse

All our antique rocking horses date from about 1880 to 1930, the golden period
of rocking horse manufacture, and have been thoroughly but sympathetically restored in our workshop.
This pretty medium size rocking horse is typical of the work of highly regarded makers,
F.H. Ayres of London, and dates from the Edwardian period circa 1910.
