I live in northwest Colorado by the White River with my wife Pam, and son Landon on the family ranch. I started carving whistles out of deer antlers several years ago. While showing some to a friend, who also did antler carving silhouettes in elk or deer shoulder blades. It was obvious that we both liked the idea. Later, I found a bleached and weathered antelope shoulder blade. I took it home, cleaned it up and sketched a howling coyote with a tree. After it was finished, it slightly resembled the sketch, but it was a start and I just had to try it on something bigger. Since then, I have carved on antelope, deer, elk, moose, and bear shoulder blades. Since this hobby has become a family affair, my wife and eight-year-old son often help out in the cleaning and bleaching process which can literally take days. Several hours are spent on each one as they are individually sketched and carved, then bleached for up to 2 days. No patterns are used. No two are the same. I use the ideas that come from my background growing up with wildlife all around me and as a professional guide.
